Introducing: Our green tomato!

Hi y’all, Jess here - co-founder of Leftovers Community. Today we’re going to share the story behind our brand new logo.

When Gaby and I first brainstormed the concept of Leftovers Community, we were absolutely sure about one thing: we wanted Adrienne Luther Johnson, an incredibly talented local mid-Missouri artist, to design our logo.

And the day has finally come! Here she is - the lovely green tomato that we hope will become synonymous with Leftovers Community.

As does everything you’ll see here at Leftovers, this tomato has a story. We chose the green tomato - green specifically - because it represents potential.

Potential in the overlooked, the unseen and undervalued. Potential at the beginning of the season, for growth and hope and warmth.

And, at the end of the season - when it transforms from a leftover on the vine to a delicacy in a jar, a memory of a season passed, or fodder for the next.

Its unripened green represents the need for patience, potential and also for progress. A reminder to see the good in what is and what’s to come.

We chose the tomato because of its relationship to our own food stories, but also to global food stories - it’s not unique to us. Its presence and history is long, wide and complicated, and so are some of the stories we’ll be sharing here at Leftovers Community.

Then there’s the slice - a nod to the depth of our storytelling, recipe development, and of our connection to this community we call home. Food and story, on the plate and in words, are intertwined here.

To those of you who are part of our growing community: we’re excited to share our new logo with you, and look forward to building this platform together. We’d also like to know: what’s your connection to the tomato, green or otherwise? Share your story with us in the comments!
